CAREABOUTKIDS

PARENTS: Caregivers/parents should take a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) course. Knowing these skills is important around the water and will expand your capabilities to provide care for your child... it can be a lifesaver when seconds count. MY WORD: When it comes to children you can't be prepared enough as the worst is always a possibility.

PARENTS: Never leave a container such as a bucket with even a small amount of liquid unattended. When finished using a container, empty it immediately. Do not leave empty containers outside in the yard or around the house where they may accumulate water and attract young children. Other items that contain liquids that may be hazardous are sinks, coolers, fish tanks, and landscape ponds. The following items are a sample of safety products to consider for your home: Toilet seat lock, safety gates, cabinet locks, bath thermometer, door latch. MY WORD: Liquids are dangerous unless respected for its safety concerns.

PARENTS: About reading: Teachers cannot possibly teach students the meaning of every new word they see or read. Children should be taught how to use dictionaries to learn word meanings, how to use known words and word parts to figure out other words, and how to get clues about a word from the rest of the sentence. Good readers think as they read and they know whether what they are reading is making sense. Teachers help children to check their understanding. When children are having difficulty, teachers show them ways to figure out the meaning of what they are reading.MY WORD: It is important to stay aware of what is being taught in school to your children.

PARENTS: If your child is reading at school you should see teachers: continuing to teach letter-sound relationships for children who need more practice. On average, children need about two years of instruction in letter-sound relationships to become good spellers as well as readers.: Teaching the meaning of words, especially words that are important to understanding a book. MY WORD:Reading is the most important skill a child can learn.
