PARENTS:Becoming a reader involves the development of important skills, including learning to: use language in conversation - listen and respond to stories read aloud - recognize and name the letters of the alphabet - listen to the sounds of spoken language - connect sounds to letters to figure out the "code" of reading - read often so that recognizing words becomes easy and automatic - learn and use new words - understand what is read. Preschool and kindergarten teachers set the stage for your child to learn to read with some critical early skills. MY WORD: Enjoy reading and your child will learn to be a good reader from your example. It doesn't matter what you read - just read in front of your child.

PARENTS: The potential for intelligent behavior does not simply unfold. Its development needs experience, encouragement, affection, and tender, loving care along with stimulation from the environment. An important element in a child's mental and emotional growth is the learning of altruism, the ability to consider the wellbeing of others, which some experts believe is realated to the development of conscience, knowing the difference between right and wrong. A preschooler may not know the difference between make-believe and lying. She/he may not see the difference between fact (what is true) and fantansy (the way she/he would like it to be). As a result, she/he may color facts when telling a story to make it come out the way she/he wants it to MY WORD:Child care centers contribute many of the necessary cognitive skills that a child needs for positive mental development.

PARENTS: Bath safety: Before you begin bathing your child, have all supplies within arm's reach and in front of you. DO NOT leave a baby unattended for even a second. If you need to leave the bathroom, take the baby with you. DO NOT rely on older children to watch the baby for you. Never leave a child unattended while filling the bathtub and always empty bathwater immediately after use. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water. MY WORD: Test the water with your elbow to be sure it is"warm". NOT hot, or cold.

PARENTS: Children who read well come from homes in which there are plenty of books, magazines, and newspapers and in which everyone reads-parents, brothers, and sisters. Their parents encourage reading and make time for it. It's clear that the family enjoys reading. Have plenty of paper, pencils, chalkboards, and crayons for your child to use in drawing and writing.
Writing helps children learn the realationships between letters and sounds. If the child is too young to write with a pencil, use magnetic board and letters.MY WORD: Libraries are our taxes at their best use. Books.books, books all kinds. Reading hour designed for children.
